Welcome to St Mary's Catholic Church, Barnard Castle, a delightful church set in beautiful grounds in historic Barnard Castle, gateway to the hidden gem of Teesdale.
The Catholic Faith has been in Teesdale from very early on. The present Anglican church of St Mary's goes back to Norman times. During the Reformation many local families held on to the Faith and suffered as a consequence.
The modern parish of St Mary's goes back to 1845 when the first parish priest was appointed. He, Father William Allen, bought the Union Hall in the centre of town and transformed it into a parish church. This building served as the centre of the parish until the new church of St Mary's was opened in 1928. The old church was sold and has now been demolished to make way for housing.
The parish of St Mary's extends for the whole of Upper Teesdale, including many villages and especially includes Middleton-in-Teesdale, where a small chapel-of-ease now serves the local people and visitors alike.
Father Grieves is our Parish Priest as well as for St Osmund's in Gainford and will retire at the end of May 2021. Father Mason, our new parish priest will join us after this. Father Grieves’ contact details: Landline:01325 730191 Mobile: 0777 559 1105 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org, St Osmund's Presbytery, Main Road, Gainford, County Durham, DL2 3DZ.

Fr Thomas Mason
We are delighted to let you know that Father Thomas Mason will be joining you after Easter as Parish Priest of St Mary’s Barnard Castle and St Osmund’s Gainford, and Pastor of the Ordinariate Mission based at Gainford following the retirement of Father Ian Grieves.
Fr Thomas is 41 years of age, the son of an Anglican clergyman. On leaving school he studied economics and international relations at the University of St Andrews. After graduation, he worked in University administration for a number of years. Following acceptance for formation for ordination he studied at Blackfriars in Oxford and then St Mary’s College Oscott. He was ordained priest in June 2018 by the Archbishop of Birmingham, The Most Revd Bernard Longely, at the Birmingham Oratory which wasfounded by St John Henry Newman. Since ordination he has been assistant priest in the parish of Christ the King, Eastbourne, in the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, where the parish priest is also a priest of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. As well as assisting in the diocesan parish he has assisted in ministering to the Ordinariate Mission in Eastbourne. He looks forward to moving to Barnard Castle and serving the Catholic communities in St Mary’s, Barnard Castle, St Osmund’s, Gainford and the Ordinariate mission based at Gainford.
We hope he will be able to move to the parish in early June after Father Grieves has vacated the house in Gainford where he will live for some weeks while the presbytery in Barnard Castle is made ready.
