Welcome
Welcome to St Mary's Catholic Church, Barnard Castle, a delightful church set in beautiful grounds in historic Barnard Castle, gateway to the hidden gem of Teesdale.
The Catholic Faith has been in Teesdale from very early on. The present Anglican church of St Mary's goes back to Norman times. During the Reformation many local families held on to the Faith and suffered as a consequence.
The modern parish of St Mary's goes back to 1845 when the first parish priest was appointed. He, Father William Allen, bought the Union Hall in the centre of town and transformed it into a parish church. This building served as the centre of the parish until the new church of St Mary's was opened in 1928. The old church was sold and has now been demolished to make way for housing.
The parish of St Mary's extends for the whole of Upper Teesdale, including many villages and especially includes Middleton-in-Teesdale, where a small chapel-of-ease now serves the local people and visitors alike.
Father Thomas Mason is our parish priest. Contact details: Mobile: 07876 308657. Email: barnardcastle.stmary@rcdhn.org.uk
